Always phone before you to go see people in their homes

Postby Ganesha » Sun Feb 14, 2010 10:06 pm

We generally just go over to the person's home we want to meet and wait for him there, in Nepal. If the person is important or your subject matter is serious, you generally land there in the other person's home before seven am, rain or shine, all unannounced! And it is accepted.

In the West though, landing up at somebody's porch unannounced is considered highly intrusive. Never do that if you want to save yourself from the embarrassment. Always pick up the phone, well in advance and tell them that you are arriving there. Better yet, see if they would like to meet you in their place. Chances are, a coffee shop might be the preferred place, instead!

Yes, I could not agree more.. not only here, but at home or anywhere in the world... :) I would go out on the limb and say that if you are visiting a friend for a longer stay, call weeks in advance or even months in advance. I've had friends call me up in the morning and say they are reaching my place for lunch. Don't get me wrong.. I love to have friends over. Its just nice to have more time for my family to prepare for the visit... haha.. :) good one.

But its fun to go to a Nepali's place without calling. ha.ha.. Some times people are visibly irritated but do not have the guts to shoo you away. Other times, they are visibly surprised and welcome you anyhow. If you are a bachelor though, I have seen you are welcome anywhere!
